Govt losing Rs 2,400 cr from rampant smuggling of high-end phones
New Delhi: At a time when the government has been squeezed of revenue, the mobile handsets industry has pointed out that excessive duties of 20 per cent on high-end phones priced at Rs 50,000 and above is causing a loss of Rs 2,400 crore on an annual basis to the government. The industry, in a representation to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce &Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Electronics & IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, has stated that there is an immediate need to rationalise duties down to Rs 4,000 per phone beyond a landed price of Rs 20,000 for imported phones. Phones in this range sell for nearly double the price in the open market, after adding duties, GST and margins as well as marketing, distribution and inventory holding costs for the entire supply chain, which includes brand owners, manufacturers, national and regional distributors and retailers. In a detailed letter, the leading industry association for mobile handset manufacturers - India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA) - whose members include Oppo, Vivo, Flextronics, Foxconn and Apple - has argued that a change to a flat rate would wipe out the losses to the exchequer and result in an additional earning of Rs 1,000 crore on account of GST collection.

Feast your eyes on these stunning new iPhone 12 renders
This year is set to be a major one for the iPhone, with the new iPhone 12 series poised to include 5G support, four phones in three display sizes, and at least some of the models boasting the biggest redesign the phone has seen over the last few generations. Among the tidbits that have leaked out, the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature a new rear camera setup though they’ll still have a notch plus flat steel all around the edges. The lineup will also include 5G support and come in 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.7-inch variants that also feature OLED screens and 2mm bezels. Along these lines, new iPhone 12 concept renderings have just been published that provide a better look at what we're likely to see once Apple officially unveils the new iPhone series later this year. The renderings below combine publicly released leaks and rumors that have come out so far to result in these images, produced via a partnership between Dutch tech news blog LetsGoDigital and designer Jermaine Smit, aka Concept Creator.

MGM Held Talks With Apple and Netflix to Gauge Interest in Acquisition
MGM held preliminary talks with Apple, Netflix, and other large media companies to gauge their interest in a possible acquisition, reports CNBC . The report confirms another report from The Wall Street Journal last month that suggested Apple was exploring deals for MGM Holdings content, though the talks had "yet to reach an advanced stage." A deal with MGM would potentially offer Apple a huge catalog of content to add to Apple TV Plus . MGM owns the James Bond franchise and is responsible for multiple hit TV shows like "The Handmaid's Tale," which currently airs on Hulu. It also owns Epix and the rights to movies like "Rocky" and "Mad Max." There's no word on when and if MGM and Apple might reach some kind of deal, and all companies declined to comment on the ongoing talks. Right now, Apple is behind other streaming media services. Apple TV + features a handful of original Apple shows, like "The Morning Show," "For All Mankind," "Servant," and "See." Some of the shows have been nominated for rewards and have proven popular, but Apple has a long way to go to be able to compete with the larger catalogs available from Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+.
New leak says the Pixel 5 won’t be Google’s first 5G phone
Google is widely expected to launch two smartphone lines this year: the affordable Pixel 4a at I/O 2020, and the Pixel 5 that should see the light of day in October. Both, however, will appear in leaks much earlier than that, considering what happened to their predecessors — and we already have plenty of exciting Pixel 4a leaks for you. The latest report seems to confirm a previous leak that said the Pixel 5 won't be Google's first 5G phone . Soon after unveiling the Pixel 4 series last fall, Google addressed the lack of 5G connectivity and said that the time was simply not right for a 5G Pixel 4. The stance isn't surprising, considering that Apple has been using the same approach for previous wireless standards. Apple is expected to add 5G support to all its 2020 iPhone 12 models, and Google will probably do the same with the Pixel 5. Until that happens, Google might launch the rarest of all 5G phones: An affordable one. A report a few weeks ago said that Google's Pixel 4a prototypes include versions built on Qualcomm's new budget 5G platform, the Snapdragon 765.
